Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) is a proprietary protocol implemented on Cisco routers and Layer 3 switches for continuity of service. HSRP is used primarily to ensure the availability of the default gateway in a subnet despite a failed router. HSRP is described in RFC 2281.
Why use HSRP ?
HSRP (Hot Standby Routing Protocol) is used to ensure high availability of the network gateway. The IP address of the gateway is configured on two different routers. One of these interfaces is active. If the active interface is no longer accessible, passive interface becomes active.

In the output of this command, the active router is R2 (according to the priority given in the configuration of the interfaces).
